In all honesty, if you're interested in colony building and management games, make room in your budget for both. It's difficult to say what will happen with Surviving Mars post release (since it ain't even out yet), but knowing the devs I suspect it'll be receiving lots of updates and expansions in the future as well.

They're both fabulous looking games and each definitely has a lot of depth to its gameplay playing Aven Colony on higher difficulty levels in severe weather is a hell of a challenge! Aven Colony has been getting free content expansions and updates from the devs ever since it released from Early Access on Steam, and they aren't done adding to it yet. I'd say Aven Colony is far more of a pure science fiction game, while Surviving Mars is looking to encompass what colonization might look like in the actual near future. Both games definitely feature a lot of extraction, production, supply and demand and maintenance work. It looks to simulate extraction of actual, known mineral resources and management of current or near future robotic technology, and seems to have less of an emphasis on working to prevent upheaval and conflict among your colonists.Īven Colony is, in my opinion, a larger scale game than Surviving Mars, but that's simply scope, not a positive or negative assessment.

Surviving Mars seems to hew a bit closer to real-world science, albeit striking an artful balance between current concepts of Mars colonization and a '50s "Science!" theme. It even simulates social upheaval, protests and crime in larger colonies, and allows the production of futuristic drugs and sedatives to keep people in line. While the games are broadly and thematically similar, Aven Colony is much more "futuristic", focusing on large scale colony construction, management and defense in different alien biomes, with hostile alien life being a prominent example of the sci-fi theme. I've played a lot of Aven Colony on Itch (before it was released onto Steam) and have watched & read quite a bit of the converage of Surviving Mars.
